Jurgen Klopp drops Mohamed Salah hint after Liverpool striker bench at Palace

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Liverpool will take Mohamed Salah off the Crystal Palace bench.

There was some surprise among fans when the forward was named a substitute despite having scored in four straight games for the Reds.

Still, Klopp has insisted on protecting players during a checkered Premier League season and he has stayed true to his word.

Klopp says the number of games Salah has played recently, having started four games in less than two weeks, was the deciding factor in why he’s on the bench at Selhurst Park.

Still, the Reds boss backed his star striker to make a difference on the submarine bench if he needed to.

Klopp says he expects a tough game against a Palace side who have had a strong, albeit unspectacular start to the season.

Referring to their acquisition of Eberechi Eze, Klopp said Palace were a strong Premier League side, effective on the counterattack – just like Wednesday’s opponent Tottenham Hotspur.

“Both teams are in the same situation, playing Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday so it will be a tough one,” Klopp told BT Sport ahead of the game.

“Palace play a similar system to Tottenham, they like to counterattack so we have to go back.

“Mo Salah is on the bench, they have all played a lot of games. He can come and make a difference. We need all the boys.

“Bringing in Eze was smart business for Palace, Schlupp has found his place, Zaha is playing higher – they are a real Premier League team.”

Meanwhile, Palace boss Roy Hodgson lamented the fact that former Reds striker Christian Benteke was unavailable to play against his former club due to a midweek red card.

“We are very positive, it is always a pleasure to welcome a team like Liverpool to Selhurst Park. Our mood is good after three good performances,” he said.

“Christian Benteke would have been a handful for Liverpool but we were stripped of that. Jordan Ayew has always done well for us.

“Nathaniel Clyne has recovered well from a serious injury and is delighted to be playing against his former club.

“You don’t become champions of England and Europe without the skills they have – they find a way to start from scratch every time.”
