DENVER – A La Plata County jury on Friday found Mark Redwine guilty of second degree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of his son, Dylan Redwine, who went missing in November 2012.
The jury deliberated for about 6.5 hours Thursday afternoon and Friday before delivering its verdict after more than four weeks of oral argument. The courtroom gasped as the jury read the guilty verdict on the murder count.
The verdict came nearly nine years after 13-year-old Dylan Redwine went missing from his father’s house near Lake Vallecito, outside Durango. Dylan had been there on a court ordered visit.

Dougherty also claimed that Mark Redwine became enraged and killed his son after Dylan confronted him with photos allegedly showing Mark eating feces and wearing female lingerie. Dylan’s mother had been granted custody nine months earlier and Mark’s relationship with her son reportedly deteriorated.
Mark Redwine’s indictment alleged that Dylan had repeatedly said that he was angry with his father and did not want to visit him because he was uncomfortable after seeing the compromising photos.
Justin Bogan, public defender for Mark Redwine, used the circumstantial evidence to tell the jury the evidence did not support Mark’s murder of his son – claiming the prosecution’s evidence was “so thin” and telling the jurors that prosecutors asked them to speculate to find a verdict.
“They didn’t give you any information about what really happened,” Bogan said.
But it took a short time for the jury to reach unanimous guilty verdicts on both counts.
The judge set Redwine’s sentencing date for October 8 at 9 a.m. The two counts Redwine was convicted of are Class 2 felonies, punishable by prison terms of up to 48 years.
