Jussie Smollett allowed to leave Illinois: judge

Jussie Smollett has received special permission to leave Illinois while awaiting trial.

A Chicago judge on Monday told the star of "Empire" that he was allowed to travel to New York and California to meet his team of lawyers, but nowhere else.

Smollett faces charges of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report and organizing a racist and homophobic attack. The actor, aged 36, gay and black, denied the charges against him. He is currently on bail.

Smollett had been banned from leaving the state without the permission of the judge in his case. He is allowed to attend meetings with his lawyers, but can not leave the country.

His next hearing is March 14.
