Jussie Smollett is back on Instagram.
the Empire The star returned Monday on the social media platform, for the first time since its alleged attack of January. Smollett, 36, posted an excerpt from Tarell's impassioned speech Alvin McCraney on Black Queerness at the presentation of his play, Choir boy, at the 2019 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday. Choir boy was in the running for the best game as well as three other prizes.
Smollett had attended the opening night of the play earlier this year. The distribution dedicated a performance to Smollett in January. "@ Octarell_again?? So much #PRIDE", the actor wrote Monday next to the video – his first message since January 28th. Comments have been disabled.
Smollett had abused social media since he was reportedly the victim of a homophobic and racist attack in Chicago on Jan. 29.
The actor was then charged with 16 counts by a grand jury for allegedly lied to the police during the announcement of the attack. The police insisted that the actor, who is black and gay, had staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and that he wanted publicity. Smollett, who maintained his innocence in the case, reached an agreement with prosecutors in March and all criminal charges were dropped.
In the midst of the scandal, Smollett was written at the end of the fifth season of Empire. His return to social media comes a week after creator Lee Daniels revealed that Smollett would not play his role as Jamal Lyon in the sixth and final season of the series.
