Jussie Smollett: What really happened on January 29, 2019

Jussie Smollett faces a charge of disorderly conduct alleging filing a false police report and being attacked the night of January 29 near his Streeterville apartment. The investigators used surveillance camera recordings, cell phone and bank recordings, as well as testimonies (including the cooperation of the two men alleged to have been assaulted by Smollett) to conclude that the attack was taking place. Smollett arrives at the O 'Hare International Airport by flying from New York after a four hour delay.

Smollett calls Abimbola "Abel" Osundairo and tells him that "the attack" would take place at 2 am, at the corner of New and North Water Streets, a predetermined location.

Minutes later

Abel's brother, Olabinjo Osundairo, orders a ride in Uber, which picks up the brothers in their Lakeview apartment and drops them off in the 1400 block of North Wells Street. They hail a cab that takes them three blocks from the meeting place.

The surveillance video shows the Osundairo brothers walking in an area bounded on the north by Illinois Street, south by the Chicago River, west of Columbus Drive and east of Lake Shore Drive.

Smollett arrives at his Streeterville apartment from the airport O. Hare.

Smollett leaves his building to walk to the Subway restaurant located 500 meters from McClurg Court.

The Osundairo brothers arrive at the intersection of New and North Water Streets, but Smollett is not there. They walk a quarter block north and wait near a bench.

Smollett arrives and the attack takes place just outside the sight of a nearby surveillance camera. He will later assert that two men approached him, shouted insults at him, punched him in the face and poured him an "unknown substance" before one of them was caught. Wind up around his neck. While the 45-second incident occurs, a nearby NBC News Chicago employee watches and later tells the police that she has not heard anything. Smollett also stated that he was on the phone with his manager at the time of the attack.

After the attack

The video evidence shows the brothers running south towards the Chicago River and west to Columbus Drive.

The video shows the brothers entering a cab at the Hyatt Regency, south of the river, at 151 E. Wacker Drive.

2:25 p.m.

The Osundairo brothers leave the cab in block 3600 North Marshfield Avenue, a few blocks from their Lakeview apartment, heading north.

2:27 p.m.

Smollett's commercial manager, Frank Gatson, calls the police from the actor's apartment located in the 300 block of East North Water Street. The images from the surveillance camera show that the actor still had a rope around his neck when he returned to the building.

2:42 p.m.

Officers arrive at Smollett's apartment to interrogate him. They observe cuts and scrapes on the actor's face and notice a small rope around his neck. At Smollett's request, the agents then turn off their body cameras. According to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, Smollett told them that the attackers had shouted that he was in "MAGA country", apparently referring to Donald Trump's campaign slogan: "Make America Great Again ".

Smollett goes to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after the police advised him to do so. He was later reported to be in good condition, treated for scrapes and bruises, and then released.
