Justice Department plans three more inmate executions for lame Trump period

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Friday the executions of three federal death row inmates, each scheduled to take place before the president-elect. Alfred Bourgeois, Cory Johnson and Dustin John Higgs, charged with the murder of a child, the murder of seven people and the kidnapping and murder of three women, respectively, are expected to be put to death on three different dates in December and January.

Higgs, convicted of offenses against three DC women in 1996, will now be executed on January 15, just days before Biden takes office.

The announcement by United States Attorney General William J. Barr follows news of three more planned executions also slated for Trump’s lame period.

Wave of scheduled executions reflects reluctance over Biden’s claim that he will reverse the Trump administration’s resumption of capital punishment once it takes control of the Oval Office and urges states to end to their executions.

According to the New York Times, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, Robert Dunham, said executions during a transition period in the White House were extremely unusual.

The DOJ did not respond to The Hill’s previous request for comment on planned executions.
