Justin Bieber in a movie with Diane Keaton would be strange casting news. Even more bizarre is Diane Keaton appearing in one of Bieber’s music videos… but here we are. The Oscar-winning actor plays Bieber’s grandmother in his “Ghost” visual, released today. In the video, after his grandfather dies, Justin reconnects with his grandmother, goes out drinking and dancing, and updates his dating profile – just the usual intergenerational hobbies for some people, I guess? I can’t imagine helping my grandma with the ins and outs of Tinder. I also can’t imagine throwing shots and dancing with her at her local bar. Justin and Diane don’t really sell any relevant content here, but it’s cute.
Vogue did a bit on the video, as Diane Keaton brought her own clothes and hats, as her quirky style seems to be in characterizing all of her roles these days. But maybe Justin’s real grandmother is a weirdo? Diane tells Vogue that Justin was the one who called her and that she was down because she thought the song was “formidable”. It’s a heartwarming little song, with a simple message about settling for someone’s ghost because they’re no longer there. He could have easily made a basic video with a lover who broke up with him, but instead he chose Diane as his widowed grandmother whom he encourages to return to the stage.
This is actually Ms. Keaton’s first clip. She also told Vogue that she had the best time touring with Justin and that it caused a different creative itch because she didn’t have lines. She could approach the game in a smoother and looser way, she never had the chance to act outside the constraints of someone else’s script. Someone as accomplished as Diane Keaton always has career firsts and this time it’s thanks to a 27-year-old pop star. More importantly, what do her kids (who are both around Justin’s age) think about her being in her music video? If my grandmother was filming with Bieber, you better believe I would call her for a debriefing on her ride back from the set.
Today, Bieber also released his latest doc, Justin Bieber: Our World, which recounts his life as he prepared for his 2020 New Years concert. At one point in the document, Hailey asks what his intentions are for 2021. Most notably, he says, “I hope we crush a nugget”. I cannot say that I have ever heard of a childbirth described as a crush and certainly not by a woman. Gawker said “it looks like he’s trying to do a little poo” with his wife. It made me laugh. Hailey was a little shocked about doing the crash so soon, so Justin changed his schedule to hopefully try the nugget by the end of 2021. I think most of us are surprised he doesn’t already have kids, so after his new releases today maybe he’ll keep a low profile for the rest of the year. Although he goes on tour from February to June, so I don’t expect any Bieber nuggets until next summer.
Here’s Justin for a hike yesterday in LA.
