While Spotify set the stage to expand its functionality for artists and fans during its very first Stream On event on Monday (February 22), the streaming service had a surprise at the end: an exclusive performance by Justin Bieber.
Bieber, whose more than 63 million monthly Spotify listeners make him the second most listened to artist in the world, brought the bravado that has brought him this kind of career milestone on a dynamic stage. He found something “sacred” in a candlelit underground living room for his first song with his band, before streaks of white light and embers lit up a “lonely” Bieber on what looked like a road all right in the middle of the desert.
Yet the second half of his performance distorted Benny Blanco’s tender pianistic melody into an electronic groove with trapezoidal overtones and self-tuned vocals. As cooling waves marked the end of her scorching performance, the pop superstar reappeared on a platform overlooking a sea of cloud teeming with mountains to conclude her set with “Anyone” before transforming into a flock of birds flying away.
