The rookie minicamp of the Chicago Bears this weekend put the special teams in the spotlight and presented a critical representation of Notre Dame. The former Irish kicker Justin Yoon was one of eight candidates to replace the former Bears kicker, Cody Parkey.
Yoon is the top scorer in the history of Irish football pitting Notre Dame with 329 career points.
Bears head coach Matt Nagy has deliberately focused on Parkey's famous "double bond" in the 2018 Bears against the Philadelphia Eagles in this weekend's kickoff competition. During Friday's practice, the eighth pitched from 43 yards, the same distance as Parkey's late-season kick. Yoon, Chris Blewitt, Emmit Carpenter, Elliot Fry, Casey Bednarski and Redford Jones failed the symbolic test. John Baron II and Spencer Evans both tried their luck.
Saturday provided some redemption with Yoon, Evans, Carpenter, Bednarski, Blewitt and Fry, who scored 42 yards. Current practice has limited the pool to Jones and Bednarski, without clearly replacing Parkey.
Nagy did not mention Yoon in tonight's press conference summing up the mini-camp this weekend.
Yoon received a discouraging response by finishing the weekend without a job, but the recovery of the Bears special teams remains unclear.
