The research team made a second observation: although each flavor of the JUUL pod – eight different flavors are available – contains relatively few flavoring chemicals, many of these chemicals are present in high concentrations.

"Some JUUL pods contain sufficiently high concentrations of flavoring chemicals that could make them attractive to young people," Pankow said. "We still need to determine if JUUL products will result in adverse health effects in chronic use."

"We have discovered that some flavoring chemicals, such as ethyl maltol, are also correlated with cytotoxicity, but nicotine appears to be the most potent chemical in JUUL products, because of its very high concentration." said Talbot.

The nicotine present in JUUL products currently averages about 61 milligrams per milliliter of liquid in the pods, which equates to more than a pack of conventional cigarettes.

Talbot hopes the FDA will limit the permitted nicotine concentration in electronic cigarette products.

"The FDA is trying to prevent the sale of juul under 21, but these products are still used in high schools," she said. "Our data point to the need to prevent teens from using products containing these extremely high levels of nicotine."
