Michigan coach Juwan Howard reportedly threatened Maryland coach Mark Turgeon before being sent off in the second half of Friday’s Big Ten quarterfinals.
Maryland told the conference Howard told Turgeon, “I’m going to kill you,” InsideMDSports.com reported, citing an anonymous source.
No formal complaint has been filed, according to the report. Howard is not expected to be disciplined, which means he will coach in the semi-final against Ohio State on Saturday.
The two coaches had to be separated by officials and other staff after a shouting match between the benches erupted in the second half of the Wolverines’ 79-66 victory.
Turgeon told reporters he preemptively called Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren about Michigan poking fun at its bench in two regular season clashes.
When it happened again Friday as Michigan was on its way to victory, Turgeon said he “was not going to win Game 3. And so I stood up for my team, I stood up for myself.
He was charged with a technical foul but continued to coach the match, while Howard was sent off after making two technical fouls.
Michigan freshman Hunter Dickinson slammed the Maryland bench in a New Years Eve win, but the report says Howard was doing it as well rather than cutting back on his players.
“We have incredibly passionate coaches, incredibly passionate players, incredibly passionate fans,” Warren said on Big Ten Network. “Just like all of those things, our office is looking at it from a sportsmanship policy perspective, which we did after the game. And there will be no further action. We believe the officials handled it appropriately on the ground and broadcast the situation.
It looked like Howard was gesturing towards the Maryland Bench to start the smashes, but he later said he was trying to discuss a call with officials when Turgeon said, “Juwan, I’m not going to you. let me talk! You never speak to me again!
