It's been more than six months since Day6 published the December issue Remember us, the second half of their Youth series of albums. Preceded by that of June Shoot me, the Korean five-member Korean pop-pop group has gone from duology to exploring topics related to the main theme, but they are now ready to move on. Today (July 15), the act has abandoned its new EP The book of us: gravity, a six-track album that spends its time brainstorming about how one interacts with oneself and the world around it, and how each individual writes the story of his or her own life.
Before the release of The book of us: gravity, bassist-vocalist Young K, who was the sole lyricist of all but one album's tracks, and guitarist-vocalist Jae spoke with Display panel by phone from Seoul to discuss what it meant for them to make their comeback with such heavy themes, while maintaining the general sound full of enthusiasm and playful excitement.
Billboard: What do you think of the release of the album? Seven months have passed since your last new music. This is your first album of 2019.
Young K: Since 2017, because of the Every Day6 project, we publish two songs a month. So we had the habit of releasing albums very often and having concerts every time.
Jae: It's been a while since we've had so much time between our outings, but we really want to tell you a bit more than you, because we left but we plotted. We are in the studio and we are just trying to make an album enough for the long run that we left. And we are pretty satisfied with the by-product, so I think it will be a good album.
With the Every Day6 project, you publish content so often, so in comparison, it must have been much more relaxed. Has there been an effect on your creative process compared to what you were doing compared to now?
Young K: We were a little rushed with the time [for Every Day6] but we always had to do our best, so we were stressed. This time we had more time, but it also gave us another kind of stress because we wanted to give something that we did not give and something that could be better than the ones we have already published. We prepare ourselves. We actually wrote more than the ones that are published.
We only chose the songs that are the best. We did not do it. The company did it. [Laughs]
Jae: Yes, we have a lot of songs. When it comes to feeling different from Every Day6, it is, and it is not. We always write songs, so it's a bit like Every Day6, but not in this big format. [Laughs] Milling! We had a lot of fun with it. It's stress, but it's a good stress.
How do you manage that? You write your own music, you work on your own material, but then you have to deal with the management of JYP Entertainment and what it wants from you.
Jae: At JYP, they're looking for some things in the songs and I feel like we're starting to understand what's going on. We always try to integrate these elements into our music. But in general, I guess everyone likes good music, so I get the impression that if you can connect with something lyrical, that's an important point. The melody seems a little cool. I just feel like good music is what makes it.
By listening to him, The book of us: gravity has a slightly more optimistic style than some of your previous versions. What do you think is the inspiration behind this album?
Young K: The one before was the Youth series, so we talked about how people around our age grow up and how they live. But in this album, we wanted to focus more on human relationships, their interaction. Basically, of course, the inspiration came from the life I lived – we live. But also, everyday conversations, how people live, how they talk, the expressions they have on their faces. Basically, everything we have experienced in our life could become an inspiration.
The album is calling The book of us and the single "Time of Our Life" contains many literary references. What is the meaning behind all this?
Young K: I guess the book means a life. It's a story we write in our life. Our title song "Time of Our Life" means in Korean "so that it becomes one of the pages" ("페이지 가 될 수"). So when we go out this song and we sing it all together at concerts or when you listen to that song, I hope that this song will become one of your pages, a moment of your life, your book . The book of us. Everyone.
So the song speaks both of love and an inspiring message that fans must carry: "I want this song to be part of your life"?
Young K: Yes exactly.
What do you want people to know about music video?
Jae: All the music videos are different, but I think this one is particularly different because we have taken a slightly more fun approach to most scenes. You will see that we are doing a lot of fun and stupid things that we do not normally do in our video clips, and I think it will refresh a bit the people who have accompanied us throughout this trip.
Why is the album subtitled? Gravity?
Young K: Outside human relations, we focused on the beginning. I guess it's a new beginning. Gravity means that we are drawn to each other.
Jae: That kind of emotion, anxiety and positive stress that you feel when you meet new people, romantically or not. At the beginning of whatever, from the beginning of a relationship, be it romantic, with a colleague, with a friend or with someone you met on the street, it all starts with what Korean word "" (seol-le- I am). I do not know how to explain that.
Young K: It's not "설레임".
Jae: Oh, "" (seol-lem). It's "설렘". Sorry, "설레임" is an ice cream.
Young K: It's like emotion …
Jae: Excitement!
Google says it's "flutter".
Young K: I guess the flutter could work …
Jae: Basically, our album this time, we wanted to focus a little more on the positive aspects, at the beginning.
is Gravity is going to be the first in a series since you are talking about it as a start?
Jae: To be honest, I do not know if anyone can answer that question. But I do not know. Perhaps? Maybe, maybe not. I am not sure. We just like making music.
There are five other tracks on the album. What do you want people to remember The book of us: gravity in general?
Young K: One of the messages we wanted to convey was that in order to establish a healthy relationship with someone else, we feel we need to know who you are first. You must first know yourself. So there are songs that convey this message. For example, there is a song called "For Me". At first, the song talks about "Who are you? I want to meet you. But in reality, it's up to the person in the mirror. From now on, I'll meet you. I will do my best to be closer to you, even though I have been with you for longer than anyone in this life. This is why she calls "For Me". And there is a song called "Cover". In Korean, she calls herself "" (po-jang), which looks like "a package". All my life, I have concealed who I am to be better, to look better. But over time, the blanket started to wear out and you start to see who I am. I think everyone has that kind of thinking, the idea that we always have to do something or be somebody else to be better and to satisfy others. But who you are inside is more important, I suppose.
Do you think you have discovered what packaging covers?
Young K: Yes and no. Because it's the song that I co-wrote with [rhythm guitarist-vocalist] Sungjin. We both talked about this idea. It can also happen everyday. For example, business. You want to look more professional or you need to talk more [using] difficult words. For example, now. I want to speak more fluently, but I do not know a lot of vocabulary. And also the idea of "Young K" because I felt like I needed that Young K character to be the person who goes on stage and be someone I'm not . I have the impression of having done this because I want to become better in my job, better as a person in general. I want people to see this person cooler and cooler. I work for that.
You want people to see this person, but does that mean you're still covering?
Young K: I do not really hide it, but at the same time, I fill what is inside the packaging. While having this blanket, making something that is inside the blanket becomes better.
Jae: In evolution in the cover.
Jae, what are the songs in the album in which you feel particularly good and want people to take note?
Jae: I do not say it because it's our title song but I really like "One Page" [“Time of Our Life”] because it's interesting. When we choose songs, there is a system, right? We had about 15 to 20 songs from this album, more than we had written before. We were giving rankings, like the top three, that we thought was a good choice for the album. It was really weird because I had never thought too much about this song after I wrote it, but after listening to all the songs of the next day, I would only think of that song. It was really weird. But he has a strange attraction on the listener.
Young J: Gravity!
Jae: Gravity! It was really strange, but I really feel that people will appreciate the song.
Day6 has slightly changed its style on this album, with much brighter sounds and more brilliant synths than some of your previous editions. Was it intentional?
Jae: Absolutely. We are always working to make progress ourselves, whether it's a change of genre, different sources or sounds. We are always looking for change, positive change.
Where do you look for inspiration as you continue to grow as artists?
Jae: I feel that we attract different kinds of inspiration for each song. If you listen to our title then "How to love", they are both dynamic and very positive, but they are different. One is a bit more groovy, a little more of this brass, while the other is a little more pop rock, punk rock. I think that more specifically, when we write "Page [Time of Our Life], "I was thinking of a more enjoyable Fall Out Boy feel on a song.
Young K: Daily life would be the biggest inspiration. Basically, we wanted to write about how people live their lives, about all the feelings they might feel.
What do you hope people feel while listening to the album?
Jae: We say this often, but we really hope that people will feel it. Feel the kind of emotions we put in it. As I said before, we work on words, it's about situations or emotions that you can feel every day. We just want you to experience those emotions with us because we live with you.
We are running out of time, but is there anything else you would like people to know about the release of The book of us: gravity or your next world tour that it precedes?
Jae: We are really sorry that the return was so long, but we really wanted to come back with an album that satisfies our musical curiosity and that would satisfy all the others.
It's only been seven months, which is relatively short for musicians outside the K-pop industry, where the situation is much faster. But that does not seem so long, especially since you've published so much content in recent years. Do you really need to be sorry?
Jae: I think so. [Laughs.] I think so, because as an artist you have a responsibility to make music and let people hear the emotions you feel. Once you take this coat, you accept it somehow. That you are very honest and open with your audience. And we are a little sorry to be able to express a little more quickly what we felt in our daily lives. But we wanted to do things well. That's what took a little time. Oh, and for our tour! We are super excited. Super ready. I hope everyone is ready to have fun and have a good night. When you come to our show, make sure to bring all the stress, all the difficulties, all the bad emotions that you have felt in your daily life. Bring them, we'll fix them.
