HARTLAND, Wisconsin (AP) – A 7-year-old Wisconsin girl with a potentially fatal brain tumor received support from several four-legged law enforcement officers.
Emma Mertens loves dogs. More than 30 human officers and their K9 partners visited Emma at her home in Hartland. The officers came from southeastern Wisconsin to surprise the girl this weekend.
West Allis Police Officer Rick Orlowski told WTMJ-TV that Emma's eyes were "the size of a saucer" when the police stopped. He said that she could not stop smiling.
Emma has an unusually diffuse intrusive pontine glioma tumor, or a DIPG tumor. A friend of the family had posted on social media a request for people to send photos of their dogs. Emma's family says she has since received thousands of letters and photos from around the world.
