Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Thursday added three women to her list of senior officials, marking the first time in history that the top three positions in the US Vice President’s office will be filled by women.
Harris, who is the first black American and South Asian woman to be elected vice president, announced on Twitter that she was appointing Tina Flournoy as chief of staff, Rohini Kosoglu as domestic policy adviser and Nancy McEldowney as security adviser national. Harris’ appointment of three women to senior aide positions follows news that Harris and President-elect Joe Biden will also have an all-female communications team, which aligns with Biden’s commitment to “build an administration that looks like America “.
Flournoy, a graduate of Georgetown University and the Georgetown University Law Center, is currently chief of staff to former President Bill Clinton. Prior to taking on her current role, Flournoy worked as an assistant to the president for public policy at the American Federation of Teachers, which is an international union with more than 1.6 million members.
Flournoy joins the Harris team with years of political experience. Over the past 30 years, she has served in several Democratic Party positions, including her role as General Counsel for the 1992 Democratic National Convention and Legal Advisor to the Democratic National Committee under Presidents Paul Kirk and Ron Brown. In addition, Flournoy served as the Transition Team Leader for Governor Howard Dean’s Democratic National Committee. Dean was chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2005 to 2009.
After Harris’ announcement, Clinton took to Twitter to congratulate Flournoy on his new role after working with him for nearly eight years.
Kosoglu, who Harris appointed as a domestic policy adviser, is currently Harris’ senior advisor on the Biden-Harris transition team and previously worked as a senior advisor on the Biden-Harris campaign. Prior to these positions, Kosoglu served as Harris’ chief of staff for her Senate office, making her the first South Asian American woman to hold that position in the history of the United States Senate. Kosoglu, who also served as Harris’ presidential campaign chief of staff, is a graduate of the University of Michigan and George Washington University. Earlier this year, she was a Spring 2020 resident at the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
McEldowney, whom Harris has appointed as National Security Advisor, will join the team with more than 30 years of experience in the United States Foreign Service, having worked as the United States Ambassador to Bulgaria and in charge of affairs and deputy head of mission in Turkey and Azerbaijan. .
A graduate of New College of Florida, Columbia University and the University of National Defense, McEldowney spent time early in her career working as a leading policy advisor on Europe. He has notably held the post of Director of European Affairs on the staff of President Clinton’s National Security Council and First Deputy Under Secretary of State in the Office of European and Eurasian Affairs.
Harris’ new appointments add to the growing list of various leaders who will join the Biden-Harris administration in the White House in January 2021.
