Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday expressed support for the Texas Democrats’ plan to flee the state en masse to prevent the legislative quorum needed to advance GOP bills, including new voting restrictions.

“I applaud their stand for the rights of all Americans and Texans to express their voices through their unhindered vote,” Harris said Monday at a voting rights meeting in Detroit, according to Tim Perry, CBS News reporter.

“They are leaders who walk the path so many others have done before,” she added. “When they fought and many died for our right to vote.”

Harris also said Texas lawmakers have shown “extraordinary courage and commitment,” Perry reported.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, called a special legislative session on July 8 to push through a list of Conservative priorities, including voting reform. Republicans in state legislatures across the United States imposed new, stricter voting restrictions in the wake of the 2020 election, when many states expanded access to voting due to the pandemic.

Other priorities for the special session include legislation focused on access to abortion, social media businesses, transgender youth and teaching critical race theory in schools, Grace previously reported. Panetta from Insider.

Texas Democrats walked out of the last legislative session to prevent passage of a bill that would have introduced criminal penalties for election officials.
