Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will step down from her Senate seat on Monday – two days before she and President-elect Joe Biden are sworn in on inauguration day.

Harris’ resignation will allow California Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint Alex Padilla, a Democrat who serves as secretary of state, to fill the last two years of his vacant post.

“She informed Governor Newsom and sent him a formal indication that she would resign. And then she’ll make an official announcement on Monday, ”a Harris aide said, The Hill reported on Sunday.

Padilla will become the first Latino senator from the Golden State.

Harris will not be giving a farewell speech in the Senate as the chamber is not expected to meet until Tuesday.

As vice president, Harris will be set to vote in the Senate which will be split 50-50 after Democrats Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock are seated in the chamber.

They beat the outgoing GOP Senators. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler in a Senate run-off in Georgia earlier this month.
