Mathieu has been on the team’s reserve / COVID list since September 1. He will now be eligible to play the season opener against the Cleveland Browns at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
But according to one report of NFL Network Mike Garafalo, whether Mathieu will actually play in Sunday’s game – and if so, how many – is open to question.
#Chefs announce that Tyrann Mathieu has been activated from the COVID-19 list. However, it looks like they still want to watch him before tomorrow. It has been inactive for over a week, so we will see what its status will be in relation to the #Brown.

According to Garafalo, “it appears that” the team intend to “monitor” safety before making a decision regarding their playing time in the Week 1 game. exposure to the virus – it was never clear if he had any symptoms of it – he hasn’t been on the training ground for 10 days. Even if he’s playing, he might not be 100%.
But according to Chiefs coaches and players, Mathieu continued to participate in classroom work virtually while in COVID protocol, so he should at least know the team’s plans for Sunday’s game.
The chiefs, in fact, have now announced that Mathieu is questionable for Sunday’s game.
Whether he’s playing or not, Mathieu’s activation brings the Chiefs roster down to 53 players. After linebacker Willie Gay Jr. was placed on the reserve / injured roster, the team never made a corresponding addition to the roster.
Meanwhile, the chefs have raised training team defensive back Zayne Anderson on the active roster. As a high player, he will automatically return to the practice squad after Sunday’s game.
The team also released defensive back Shakur Brown from the practice squad, signing linebacker Elijah Sullivan to take his place. The San Francisco 49ers signed the former Kansas State linebacker as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. The 49ers released him on September 7.
