Kansas City Chiefs won and lost Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs had a secure lead over the Cleveland Browns when the one thing that couldn’t happen to them did. They lost Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes left with a concussion. The chefs almost missed it. Then Mahomes’ replacement Chad Henne pulled off a pair of unlikely plays to seal a crazy 22-17 victory and send Kansas City to the AFC championship.

But before the Chiefs welcome the Buffalo Bills in this game for a spot in the Super Bowl, there’s an unresolved question: Will Mahomes be available to play?

The chances are not great. From 2015 to 2019, NFL quarterbacks had a median of seven days after sustaining a concussion in a game, according to the league. The AFC championship takes place exactly one week after Sunday’s game, meaning Mahomes is expected to return earlier than usual to play.

It’s not as easy as Mahomes to say he feels ready to play. It’s not in his hands. It is also not in the hands of the team.
