Kanye West presents new songs at listening session in Las Vegas

Kanye West apparently created new material at a small listening event in Las Vegas, according to several unconfirmed but seemingly reliable social media reports that surfaced on Sunday – several of which apparently include clips of at least two songs. . The clips came amid reports that a new West album is imminent – possibly the long-overdue “Donda,” which is named after her late mother and is one of many unreleased albums in recent years.

Contacted by Variety, a representative for West was unable to immediately confirm the authenticity of any of the reports.

Videos and photos show West hunched over DJ gear with his head moving, wearing a balaclava over his head that only exposed his eyes, as a small crowd watches, though the footage is dark and there is no identifying characteristic.

The most substantial clip is almost 30 seconds long and features a West rap to a steady beat with a loud melodic undertow driven by what looks like a Hammond organ. The recording is indistinct but West seems to be rapping about a family situation with a father who didn’t show up, a “daughter just turned one, and she still depends on her mother, big brother down the street, he’s went to buy him a gun. ” A second snippet of this song also does the trick.

Another track is billed as starring California rapper Baby Keem and is more shocking, with a section in which the rapper jumps into a scream that is reminiscent of Tyler, the creator – who was apparently in the studio recently with West, according to another, Clip of a soundless video that was tweeted by veteran rapper Consequence (and former West’s GOOD label signatory) on Saturday. The person on the board, presumably West, was masked (no eyes visible this time).

Revolt TV host Justin Laboy posted a photo of himself with a hooded character he said was West and called it “Album of the Year.”

Another report spotted a list of song titles written on a whiteboard in the background of this video – several of which have been circulating for months – and immediately speculated on a list of tracks, though a whiteboard was in the process. as close as possible to a confirmation.

Twitter quickly ignited with skeptical comments from fans who – understandably – felt ridiculed by West’s many promised but unseen plans. Although he remains one of the most important artists and producers in the history of pop and especially hip-hop, West’s production over the past few years has been frustrating for many longtime fans, although its brilliance shines through on several songs. His most recent album was religious-themed “Jesus Is King” in October 2019 (which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Album), followed by “Jesus Is Born,” a collection featuring musicians from his performances. ” Sunday Service “.

Other recent reports on West saw him in San Francisco earlier this week with Russian model Irina Shayk, a recent companion who was said to be “warming up” and “calming down” this week. A longtime and notorious social media abuser, West hasn’t posted anything to his accounts since Election Day 2020.

Variety will know more about the situation as it evolves.
