The Minnesota Timberwolves' center, Karl-Anthony Towns, has signed the concussion protocol and is ruled out of Friday's game against the New York Knicks after being involved in a car accident Thursday in the Minneapolis area.

The Star Tribune reports that Towns was heading to the airport when he was involved in the accident. Coach Ryan Saunders told reporters that Towns was with the team at Madison Square Garden, but he did not know he would stay with them at the next stop of their road trip.

It will be the first match that the 23-year-old has missed in his career. Towns' series of 303 consecutive games to start his career is the most important since the NBA began following beginners in 1970-1971, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The 7-foot average is 23.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.

It was not immediately clear where the crash occurred. The Minneapolis police said it was not handling any incidents involving cities.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
