According to English, Kate and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, contacted Meghan after the touching interview but were “pushed back”.
Kate Middleton reportedly attempted – and failed – to contact Meghan Markle during one of the Duchess of Sussex’s most emotional moments as a serving royal.
The difficult period in question? Shortly after the premiere of ITV’s documentary, Harry and Meghan: an African journey, which included a touching interview with Meghan in which she admitted that she “disagrees” in her life as a royal.
“Any woman, especially when she’s pregnant, you are really vulnerable, and that has been made really difficult,” Meghan said during the interview. “And then when you have a newborn baby, you know. And especially as a woman… it’s a lot. So you add that on top of trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s uh… yeah. I guess, thanks for asking the question as well, as not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to live behind the scenes. “
When interviewer Tom Bradby asked if it was fair to say Meghan was ‘not really good’, she simply replied ‘yes’.
According to royal correspondent Rebecca English, at least two other royals contacted Meghan after the moving interview, but their attempts to offer support were not well received.
“William was also deeply hurt by suggestions from the Sussex camp that he, and in particular his wife, had Meghan’s cold shoulders,” English wrote in a new column for the Daily mail. “In fact, I’ve been told that Kate – and the Countess of Wessex – have both “ contacted ” the Duchess on several occasions, especially after expressing her displeasure in a TV documentary. But they were pushed back. “
Meghan then clarified the statement during an interview for the Teenager Therapy podcast in October 2020, explaining that she was exhausted, breastfeeding during the royal tour and about to bathe her five-month-old son Archie. at the time.
“I didn’t think about that answer. I just answered honestly,” Meghan explained on the podcast. “I was in a moment of vulnerability, because I was tired, because there was no presentation. It was just, here’s where I am: I’m a mom with a four month old baby and half and we’re tired. But I think the reason it resonated with people is that everyone wants to be asked if everything is okay. “
