At 21, Kate Winslet rose to stardom when she played Rose Dewitt Bukater in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster “Titanic” – but fame comes at a price.
“I immediately went into self-protective mode [after ‘Titanic’ came out], the British star said on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast on Thursday.
“It was like night and day from day to day,” recalls the 45-year-old. “I was subjected to a lot of personal physical control. I was criticized a lot and the British press was pretty mean to me.
“I felt bullied if I’m being honest,” she admitted. “I remember thinking, ‘This is horrible and I hope it passes.’ It definitely worked, but it made me realize that if that’s what being famous was, I wasn’t ready to be famous. Certainly not. “

Winslet received an Oscar nomination for “Best Actress” but lost to Helen Hunt for “As Good As It Gets”. Instead of chasing the big Hollywood movies, Winslet decided to hone his craft and go into independent productions instead.
It wasn’t until 2009 that she won an Oscar for “Best Actress”, this time for “The Reader”.
“I was still learning to act,” she explained. “I felt like I wasn’t ready to do a lot of big jobs in Hollywood. I didn’t want to make mistakes and mess up. I wanted to be there for the long haul. I strategically tried to find little things so that I could understand the craft a little better and maintain a certain degree of privacy and dignity. “
At 25, Winslet welcomed a child, a girl named Mia Honey Threapleton. She credited motherhood for helping her notice less in the press.

“All of that stuff kinda evaporated,” she said on the exit.
Winslet has reunited with Cameron, 66. This time it’s for the sequel “Avatar”, which is currently in post-production. The film is slated for release in 2022.
She previously worked with her “Titanic” co-star Leonardo DiCaprio again in “Revolutionary Road” in 2008.
This year, Winslet is considered an Oscar nominee for her lead role in “Ammonite,” Deadline reported.
