Katie Couric’s fresh beauty is making the news.
The award-winning journalist, 64, posed makeup-free for People’s annual “Beautiful Issue,” telling the magazine she felt “both liberated and vulnerable” during the stripped-down shoot.
“You feel good because you are true to who you are and how you look. It’s a huge dose of reality! she says.
Couric kept her responses as real as her appearance, admitting that when the outlet first approached her with the concept, she thought, “Are you crazy? Surely not.”
But after thinking about it, the news icon agreed to the shoot. “Let’s face it, people feel prettier when they have makeup that enhances their features,” she says. “So I think shooting like this takes a lot of confidence.”
Even when she’s not going naked for photos, Couric said she skipped the “full treatment” during her own beauty routine, since she’s no longer in front of the camera every morning.
“If you wear too much of it, it’s really aging. If you don’t wear one, it’s terrifying, ”she said of her approach to makeup in the mid-60s, which includes her“ must-have ”L’Oréal mascara from CVS.
“You just have to wear the right amount [of makeup] to improve yourself but not to hide who you are, ”she explained. “Now people say to me, ‘We don’t like you with all that makeup on anymore!’ I think people enjoy showing you the real you.
Also, don’t expect her to be stressed out from the fine lines anytime soon. “I think wrinkles show a lifetime of laughing and smiling,” Couric said. “And that’s a great thing to show on your face.”
While Couric recently revealed that she won’t be permanently hosting “Jeopardy,” the former “Today” co-host has her own media company and produces a newsletter and podcast.
And as a mother of two daughters – Elinor, 30 and Caroline, 25 – the media mogul strives to teach her children that “girls are more than their wrapper.”
“When we start to see women as they get older and appreciate the beauty that comes with it, women will stop trying to look young all the time,” she says.
