Lilly Wachowski confirmed a popular fan theory earlier this month when she admitted that The matrix the trilogy, which she wrote and performed with her sister Lana Wachowski, was actually a transgender allegory. “I’m glad it was revealed that was the original intention,” the filmmaker said in a video for Netflix Film Club.
In a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment, series star Keanu Reeves reacted to Wachowski’s reveal, admitting that he was unaware of these deeper meanings.
“I never told Lilly about it, she never told me about it,” Reeves told us in an interview promoting the new episode of what is now her. other science fiction trilogy, Bill and Ted face the music, where he was joined by his costar Alex Winter (see above).
“I think The matrix the movies are deep, and I think allegorically a lot of people in different versions of the movie can talk about it. And for Lilly to come out and share that with us, I think that’s cool.
Fans have speculated on the gender identity intentions the Wachowskis had in mind for the series, which began in the 1999s. The matrix and was followed by 2003 The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix revolutions, since at least 2012 when Lana became transgender. Lilly followed suit in 2016.
Some of the more popular theories have pointed out that Reeves’ hero leads a double life as a computer programmer and hacker, that his chosen name is “Neo” and that the red pill that awakens reality in the Matrix could symbolize red estrogen pills.
“I’m glad people are talking about The matrix movies with a trans narrative, ”Lilly said in the Netflix video. “I love how meaningful these movies are to trans people and the way they come and say, ‘These movies saved my life.’ Because when you talk about transformation, especially in the sci-fi world, which is just about the imagination and world-building and the idea of making it possible seemingly impossible, that’s why it speaks so much to them. .
Reeves started filming the upcoming sequel The matrix 4 in San Francisco in February, but production was halted due to the coronavirus in mid-March.
When asked if the newly confirmed themes would manifest in the sequel, which is uniquely directed by Lana (from a screenplay she wrote with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell) and is slated for release in 2022 , Reeves said this:
“I don’t know. I think it will be open to interpretation,” he laughs.
Bill and Ted face the music opens in theaters and on video on demand on August 28.
