Steve Levitan is heading to streaming. In the first off-grid green light for Emmy winner Modern family co-creator, Hulu has officially taken over the comedy pilot To restart, with Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville playing the lead role.
In Restart, Created by Levitan and clearly inspired by the recent wave of comedy rebirths, when Hulu reboots a family sitcom from the early 2000s, its dysfunctional cast is forced to reunite and now must deal with their unresolved issues in the world in rapidly changing today.
Levitan co-wrote the pilot script with John Enbom (Zombie). It was based on a story by Levitan. He and Enbom produce with frequent Enbom collaborator Danielle Stokdyk. 20th Television, where Levitan is under a global contract, is the studio.
Levitan is the latest powerful broadcast showrunner to launch into streaming. Sitcom King Chuck Lorre Did It With Unstitched and The Kominsky method at Netflix; Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman did it with Netflix Grace and Frankie, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is behind Apple TV + Ted lasso, while It’s us Creator Dan Fogelman Makes His First Foray In Streaming With Upcoming Hulu Series Only the murders in the building.
Levitan just completed a season of 11 as a co-creator, executive producer and co-showrunner alongside ABC’s Christopher Lloyd Modern family, which has won five consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series. His full resume also includes the creation and executive production of the NBC comedy. Just shoot me! It is replaced by UTA.

He is replaced by UTA and Brecheen Feldman Breimer.
Knoxville, who starred and produced the box office hits, Jackass, Jackass Two, Jackass 3D, and Jackass presents: Bad Grandpa, the next one will be seen in Asshole 4, which is due out on October 22. He was recently seen in Lionsgate’s Above suspicion with Emilia Clarke. He is replaced by CAA and Sloane Offer.
