Kelly Preston paid tribute to her and her husband John Travoltafire sons Jett Travolta Friday, a few days after World Autism Awareness Day.
The 56-year-old actress posted on her Instagram page a black-and-white photo of her and the 65-year-old actor embracing the autistic teenager while he was in bed, an image that the family had shared many years ago with his death. Jett, the eldest of the couple's children, died at age 16 in 2009.
"To my sweet love, Jett … you are in our hearts forever," she wrote. "I send love to all beautiful autistic children and wonderful people who love them, may we all shine and give love and respect to children with special needs #autismawareness #autism."
Jett had died while he was on vacation with his family in the Bahamas. A seizure was considered the official cause of his death. Police had stated that the boy had died after being hit head against a bathtub. His parents and his sister survived him Ella Blue, who is now 19 years old.
"[He] was autistic. He had epileptic seizures and, very young, he had Kawasaki syndrome, "said Kelly about Jett during the CBS television series on the day The doctors in 2012.
She added that she thought that autism and seizures had contributed to Jett's death and that they had been caused by several factors, including Kawasaki's syndrome, the complications of her work "fast and painful" and the use of antibiotics during breastfeeding, which she says [Jett] Thrush, a candida yeast infection, that some studies have linked to the symptoms of autism.
After Jett's death, his family created the Jett Travolta Foundation to help children from diverse underprivileged backgrounds.
In 2010, one year after Jett's death, Kelly, then 47, gave birth to her and John's son. Benjamin Hunter.
"We have certainly bonded together," said John on Hello America in 2016. "Having little Ben is definitely a nice kind of glue for us, after a huge loss."
