Kelsey Grammer ‘happily’ confirms ‘Frasier’ reboot is in the works

Kelsey Grammer’s dream of returning to her most iconic role is finally coming true.

The Emmy and Tony-winning actor confirmed on Wednesday that a revival of “Frasier” has been given the green light by streaming service Paramount +. While details are scarce, the reboot is currently in development by writers Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, who will serve alongside Grammer as executive producers.

“Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I want to congratulate Paramount + on entering the streaming world,” Grammer told Deadline . “I look forward to sharing the next chapter in Dr. Frasier Crane’s continuing journey.

A release date for the reboot has yet to be confirmed. Currently, Grammer is set to return to television later this year in a still untitled ABC series, starring Alec Baldwin.

The actor expressed interest in the relaunch of “Frasier,” which aired on NBC from 1993 to 2004. The show was initially conceived as a spin-off of “Cheers” and followed Dr. Frasier Crane (played by Grammer ) as he embarked on a new career as a radio tips host in Seattle after divorcing his wife and moving from Boston.

In 2018, Grammer told “Today” that he had “told some writers” about a possible reboot, noting that “the odds are currently around 40 to 60.”

He seemed more confident in those plans a year later, saying a revival of the series was “definitely going to come,” but that he and the creative team had been put “on hold a little bit.”

“We just have to organize the staff and find someone who wants to give us money for it,” Grammer told reporter Graham Bensinger at the time. The new version, he added, will not take place in Seattle and will focus on the main character “in its next iteration.”

The reboot will give Grammer the distinction of playing Frasier Crane in a total of four scripted series, including “Cheers”, the original “Frasier” and a 1992 crossover episode of “Wings.”
