‘This Island of Sceptred’ will tell the story of some of the most devastating events to ever strike the UK, and that of a Prime Minister at the helm of these unprecedented times.

Kenneth Branagh is expected to play British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Michael Winterbottom’s next limited series retracing the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eligible This Sceptred Island and produced by Fremantle, Passenger by Richard Brown and Revolution Films by Michael Winterbottom, the five-part drama has also been picked up by European broadcast giant Comcast, Sky, to qualify as a Sky Original series.

This Sceptred Island will tell the story of some of the most devastating events to ever strike the UK, and of a Prime Minister leading those unprecedented times. The drama will trace the impact on Britain of this once-in-a-generation pandemic, and the response of scientists, nurses and medics as they worked tirelessly and heroically to contain and defeat the virus.

It is based on the first hand testimony of people from all walks of life; from number 10 Downing Street, the Department of Health, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), and hospitals and nursing homes across the country.

Michael Winterbottom co-wrote the series with Kieron Quirke and will direct all five episodes. He will also be an executive producer alongside Brown (Passenger). Melissa Parmenter (Revolution Films) will produce alongside Josh Hyams and Anthony Wilcox. Tim Shipman, political editor of The Sunday Times, acts as a consultant on the series.

This Sceptred Island is the first project to emerge from a multi-year first look contract for a scripted drama series signed by Fremantle and Passenger with Revolution Films.
