“Our goal is to be prepared. To ensure that what happened on the United States Capitol never happens here,” Beshear, a Democrat, told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota on Friday, adding that the Kentucky had already activated its National Guard for help.
In addition to preparation, Beshear stressed the need to “recognize these people for who they are”.
“We learned that these people intended to provoke violence, that they were domestic terrorists, and that they stopped playing patty with these so-called militias thinking they were just disguising themselves as if it was Halloween and were acting tough, ”Beshear said Friday.
“If we don’t respond, if there isn’t a total condemnation, that becomes the new normal and it would be a pretty scary America.”
In the aftermath of the U.S. Capitol uprising on Jan.6, militia members held a rally at the Kentucky headquarters, where, according to Beshear, one of the militia members showed up with fasteners.
Beshear has personally faced threats in his own state for months. Following its response to the Covid-19 pandemic in May, militia members hanged the governor in effigy.
Others passed the gates of the governor’s mansion where Beshear lives with his family, “chanting and heckling”, for him to come out, he said. Beshear was not at the governor’s mansion that day.
“What worries me is not me – it’s everyone else who can be threatened and intimidated by people like this,” Beshear said Friday. “And that’s why everyone has to be. Everyone across the country is like ‘no more.’
