Deputy Brandon Shirley, 26, was working as an off-duty security guard at Rockford Lane Auto Sales in Shively, Ky. When he was shot inside his personal vehicle at around 2:30 a.m. ET, Lt. said -Colonel Yates to CNN on the phone.

Shirley was taken to the University of Louisville hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, but “he did not survive the operation,” Yates said.

JCSO has turned the matter over to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) for investigation, Yates said.

During an early morning briefing, LMPD chief Erika Shields said she was investigating a few potential suspects, but was still in the early stages of the investigation.

According to CNN affiliate WLKY, Chief Shields called the homicide “disgusting” and said Shirley “was targeted and ambushed.”

There is no suspicious description at this time, Yates said.

Shirley had worked for the department for two years and was not married, according to Yates.
