A post-mortem on the bodies of the 16 people who died in the Gikomba fire is expected to take place today, according to police sources.

The interrogation will be part of the Thursday morning fire investigations that resulted in 70 serious injuries. Eight of them are in critical condition.

The government has set up a multi-agency team to investigate the cause of the fire that began at 2am.

There have been claims that the fire may have been caused by a power outage, but some people allege that it could have been the job of the arsonists.

Secretary of the Interior, Fred Matiang, said the police were determined to put an end to the frequent fires in the market, which some traders attributed to the rivalry of the business.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said the multi-agency team included detectives from the Criminal Investigations Branch.
