An elderly man and his wife were killed after their home in Homa Bay County was burned down, allegedly because of a land dispute.

Harrison Ogeka, 78, and Isca Atieno, 70, burned alive in their home in Kobala village in southern Rachuonyo.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Marius Tum said the police arrested the couple's son and his wife as part of the attack and detained them at the police station. 39; Oyugis.

The police had a hard time saving the lives of the couple's grandchildren, as the villagers who also linked them to the attack shouted for their blood.

A jerrycan suspected to have been used to transport gasoline used to burn the house was found near the scene.

Residents claimed that some of their grandchildren threatened to burn their grandparents' house. The couple was removed from the living fire, but later died at Matata Hospital in Oyugis.

Joel Owenga, badistant to Kawino's deputy chief, said the couple's son and the children threatened to kill them to death in exchange for possession of a plot of land.

"We made several attempts to arbitrate but the son was adamant," Owenga said.

Owenga said that the rivalry between the elderly couple and the son began in 2012 when the latter demanded a piece of land.

In 2014, the son and grandchildren planned an attack on the Ogekas, and the old man suffered a fracture to both hands and thighs.

The grandchildren confessed to the police that they were responsible for the attack.
