KRA suspended three of its executives for alleged involvement in the illegal sale of smuggled ethanol for disposal.
Agents posted in Mombasa reportedly helped sell eight containers of the chemical outside KRA's normal auction process.
According to the authority, the shipment had been hidden in the form of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and had originally been auctioned on August 9, 2016.
"After verification, they were not allowed. Were not auctioned because they did not fit the description.KRA laboratory experts identified the substance as being ethanol and therefore the items were set aside to be destroyed, "said the Commissioner of Intelligence and Strategic Operations in a statement released Thursday. with a very low odor and a high boiling point.
The chemical, also known as DGBE, is used as a solvent in coatings and cleaning applications for the industrial and consumer markets.
It is also used as a chemical intermediate to produce diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate (DBA) and certain herbicides, insecticides and plasticisers.
DGBE is also used in hydraulic brake fluid applications
On the other hand, although ethanol is very commonly used especially in alcoholic beverages, it is a product dangerous chemical.
It is highly flammable and can cause coma or death from alcohol poisoning if consumed above prescribed levels.
Pure ethanol is twice as strong as most vodkas and has been the cause of death across the country as some add to illicit beers.
The ethanol containers were reissued on March 16 at auction on April 18.

The Commission stated that action would be taken against Employees of Irregular Ethanol Sales
"KRA has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption and all KRA personnel have individual responsibility to maintain integrity.
