The retired Anglican Bishop, Johannes Otieno Angela, was accused of defiling a schoolgirl 15 years old.

The former bishop of ACK Bondo diocese appeared before Bondo's chief justice, Moses Obiero, on Monday, July 2, and denied the charges.

The wife and children of Bishop Angela were among the many people who blocked the court.

Dressed in a dark suit, a white shirt and a checkered tie, Msgr Angela arrived in court under close surveillance shortly before 10 am. He was standing on the bench under the close guard of a lone policeman.

He raised his head and looked at the magistrate as the clerk read the charges against him – that he had defiled a minor contrary to section 8 (1) of the Sexual Offenses Act 2006.

The court heard that on the night of 27-28 June 2018 in Majiwa, sub-locality of Bar-Chando, in Bondo sub-county, he had forcibly and intentionally been aware of a crime. minor of 15 years.

He was also charged with committing an indecent act with the child in violation of subsection 11 (1) of the Sexual Offenses Act, 2006, by intentionally touching the minor's private parts, accusations that he has all denied.

Speaking in a low voice, the retired prelate denied the charges while his lawyer, Stephen Kopot, applied for bail.

The prosecution did not oppose the application and the magistrate ordered that the accused be released with a Sh200,000 bail and a bond of a similar amount or pay an alternative cash deposit of Sh100,000.

The case will be mentioned on July 16, 2018 and the hearing set for two consecutive days of July 30 and 31, 2018.
