The NHL has suspended Minnesota Wild forward Kevin Fiala three games for his ugly move against Matt Roy of the Los Angeles Kings.
In Thursday’s 5-3 Wild win over the Kings, Fiala received a major on boarding and a foul play for the shot over Roy.
As you can see from the Player Safety Department’s explanation, the league believed Fiala was “fully in control” as the game developed. It was a hit at “high speed and at a dangerous distance from the boards.” There are several mentions of Fiala “seeing Roy’s numbers” before boarding her.
Other factors the NHL mentioned after suspending Fiala for three games for boarding Roy:
- Roy suffered an injury on the play.
- However, Fiala has no suspension history.

Yikes.
All in all, it was a very bad move, one that the league should legislate out of the game. It would be great if other dangerous and usually unnecessary checks were also discouraged, but this decision is better than nothing.
