Kevin Gausman of the Braves evicted for throwing behind Jose Urena Marlins in the first meeting since Ronald Acuna Jr. dives

On August 15, Marlins right-handers Jose Urena has created some headlines by beating the brave Ronald Acuna Jr. with the first step of his departure. Acuna was in the middle of a series of five straight games and had been four times in the first three games of this series.

Urena was expelled immediately after hitting Acuna and was then suspended six times. As you can imagine, the Braves were not happy. Here is what Kevin Gausman said after this match:

On Friday, Urena made her first start against the Braves after drilling Acuna, giving the Braves their first blow of retaliation. Luckily, Gausman was on the mound on Friday night and he wasted no time delivering a message. His first throw to Urena was behind him.

The marble umpire immediately dismissed Gausman – warnings were do not published – as well as Brian Snitker, director of the Braves. Here is a video of the height of the goal. This seems clearly intentional:

For the conspiracy theorists among us, I will note that the Braves called left-handed Touki Toussaint before Friday's game. He is a starter and replaced Gausman after his expulsion. It's almost – almost – as though they had called a long man knowing that Gausman would launch Urena and possibly be ejected. Hmmm.

Given the historical and obvious intent, Gausman surely has a suspension even without touching Urena. The intention matters more than the result. Six games is the usual suspension for a starting pitcher in these situations. This ensures (in theory) that it will miss a start.
