Kevin Hart was allegedly the victim of a million dollar scam perpetrated by one of his employees.
According to TMZ, the comedian’s personal shopper, Dylan Syer, is accused of defrauding Hart of $ 1.2 million between October 2017 and February 2019. New York prosecutors say Syer started working for Hart in 2015 and began to gain the trust of the actor through authorized purchases; however, over the years, Syer reportedly started using Hart’s credit card to deposit money into his own account.
Queens County DA Melinda Katz says the personal shopper used the stolen funds to purchase extravagant items, including everything from a Sam Friedman painting and several Louis Vuitton 16-piece Bearbrick collectible bags and five Patek Philippe watches from a value over $ 400,000. The prosecutor is now seeking to seize Syer’s assets up to the amount he allegedly stole.
“No one is safe from being targeted by fraudsters …” Katz said in a press release. “The accused thought he was out of reach and was living his extremely rich lifestyle fantasies. But my team discovered the bogus purchases – from credit card charges processed by the bank to tracking FedEx packages delivered to Syer’s home and business. It should serve as an uplifting tale for everyone. Whether you are a celebrity or not, anyone can fall victim to this type of fraud. Keeping track of your spending, checking your credit reports, and diligently keeping your financial information to yourself is essential.
Syer has been charged with First and Second Degree Grand Theft, First Degree and Second Degree Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, First Degree Identity Theft and First Degree Fraud Scheme. He faces 25 years in prison if convicted. Syer is due in court on February 17.
