Californian Republican Kevin McCarthy was re-elected as the head of the Republican Party of the United States House of Representatives at the 117th Congress.
McCarthy easily won the seat after a surprisingly strong GOP performance in the November election.
As Democrats regained control of the lower house, Republicans gained ground – winning seats without a single incumbent losing their race.

McCarthy was instrumental in that effort, raising more than $ 106 million this election cycle and campaigning in 33 cities in the final weeks of the campaign, according to the Associated Press.
He faced no opposition and told those in attendance for the vote this week that House Republicans were the “most united and energetic” he had ever seen.
McCarthy, a staunch supporter of President Trump, made sure to spotlight the president’s role in making this election a success.
He told reporters Trump “will continue to play a role in this nation” whether he is the new president or Trump citizen. ”
“I’m looking at the number of members who were elected; they were elected under President Trump. … And we have enlarged the party,” he said.
McCarthy supported the administration’s challenge to the “rigged” election results. Trump has yet to officially concede to President-elect Joe Biden.
Although Republicans are in the minority again – and control of the Senate is up for grabs pending the two final rounds in January – McCarthy has also promised his colleagues to “speak up.”

Scalise told reporters on Tuesday it had been a “battle” since Democrats took the House in the 2018 midterm election.
