CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kevin Stefanski isn’t concerned about that old lack of chemistry between Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. that rears his ugly head after they failed to connect in the 14-7 win of Sunday on the Vikings.
“When you throw the ball deep, you’re not going to hit all of that,” Stefanski said at his Zoom talk on Monday.
With Mayfield as imprecise as he ever was, Beckham only caught 2 of 7 targets for 27 yards. It was the sixth time the duo produced receiving yards in the 20s in their 25 games together. This is unusual for Beckham, who has only played two games in the 1920s in 59 games for the Giants.
As for Mayfield’s wild arm – he made just 15 of 33 (45%) attempts for 155 yards with no touchdowns or INT for a 59.5 rating, Stefanski had no explanation for that. He said based on what he sees in training he doesn’t think the left shoulder, which came out against the Texans two weeks ago and had to be put back on, is a factor.
He also didn’t seem to think the footwork was a problem, although Mayfield was unusually inaccurate. Leading the way, he was No.5 in the NFL with a 73.8 completion percentage, the third highest in team history in the first four weeks of a season.
Stefanski reiterated that he didn’t do a good enough job getting the guys to open, including in opening practice, which ended with another fourth baseman sack.
Jedrick Wills Jr. has an MRI
Wills was taken out for the second week in a row with his ankle injury, and this time replaced by rookie James Hudson, who made a costly false start on 4th and 1st to force the Browns to punt. Wills underwent an MRI on Monday and the Browns will continue to monitor him throughout the week. They would be more inclined to let him rest if Chris Hubbard is back from his triceps injury, but they might not have a choice this week depending on what the MRI shows.
It wasn’t a sprained ankle to begin with, but Wills was rolled by Nick Chubb in the Bears game and suffered another setback on Sunday. He threw his helmet away in frustration when he stepped on the sidelines.
Ronnie Harrison Jr. does not have a concussion
Stefanski said goaltender Ronnie Harrison Jr. did not have a concussion and was cleared Monday morning. Under the terms of the NFL concussion protocol, Harrison was not cleared Sunday after leaving the game after playing two snaps. He was replaced by Grant Delpit, who did an excellent relief job.
