The 49ers announced a roster change on Wednesday to help ease some of their injury woes at the linebacker. Veteran LB Donald Payne has signed with the club and wide receiver Kevin White has been released in a matching move.
Payne entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2017 with the Ravens. The Jaguars claimed him after Baltimore let him go in the last few cuts in the roster.
In Jacksonville, Payne has played 30 games with five starts and recorded 61 tackles and one pass break in three seasons. Last year, he rebounded in the Washington and Miami practice teams.
With Azeez Al-Shaair recovering from a sprained knee and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles in the concussion protocol, the 49ers found themselves skinny at linebacker heading into their first preseason game. Payne will give them an extra player to take reps at camp and during Saturday’s game against the Chiefs.
White, a former first-round pick for the Bears, joined the 49ers last offseason. He spent most of the year on the practice squad, but appeared in three games primarily as a special teams contributor mid-season. He was at the tail of an already slim receiving corps, and the failure to make it through a few weeks in the camp effectively ended his tenure as the 49ers.
