Keyshia Cole’s late appearance to her Verzuz the battle with Ashanti was hard to miss.
In a new interview, the singer’s DJ, GoDJ Hi-C explained why Cole was over an hour late for the R&B showdown. “It started off weird. Stuff you don’t see behind the scenes,” he confessed. “In Keyshia’s defense, I can really say she didn’t want to come out because her screen was out of focus.”
Apparently Cole didn’t want to head to the stream until the issue was resolved and she did. “She was there but she didn’t want to go out because the screen was out of focus and things were wrong. We couldn’t hear [Ashanti’s] side so there was a lot of technical stuff going on in there, ”he explained.
“Because she’s a perfectionist and when things don’t go the right way it’s downhill from there,” he continued. “She was already upset that she was pushed back like it was anyway, but there is COVID. So the build up and it made her push her record back … It just threw her energy out, but I tried my best to try to bring her back but by that time she was already upset . “
Cole’s duel with Ashanti came after two delayed dates. The set was originally scheduled for December 12 and postponed after Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19. It was postponed to January 8, before being postponed to Thursday evening.
That said, the Verzuz walked forward around 9:30 p.m. ET and saw the duo deliver to millions of viewers and up their biggest hits, as well as the debuts of their brand new singles. As Ashanti released “2:35 (I Want You)”, Cole previewed his new single “I don’t want to be in love” that hits digital streaming providers on February 5.
