Penn State’s football schedule turned his 3-0 start into a 13-spot increase in the AP Top 25 poll ahead of a home game on Saturday against Villanova. This will be the Nittany Lions’ last non-conference competition of the regular season before they embark on an eight-game Big Ten streak.
Indiana is the number one opponent in this upcoming conference schedule, and we now know the details of an Oct. 2 meeting between the Hoosiers and the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium.
The Big Ten announced Monday afternoon that the kickoff will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET, with ABC airing the TV show.
Ranked sixth nationally, Penn State has a seven-game winning streak since the start of the 2020 season with a 0-5 record. Of course, the first of those losses occurred in Indiana.
Last October, a 36-35 overtime win for the Hoosiers at Bloomington ended with controversy, as a quarterback Michael Penix, with security Penn State security Jaquan Brisker entering, submerged and extended for an end zone pylon. After a lengthy replay, it was ruled to be a successful two-point conversion, sending the Nittany Lions home with a crushing loss and kicking off a 4-0 start for Indiana.
The Hoosiers climbed to ninth place on the AP Top 25 last season. Indiana finished 6-2 with an Outback Bowl loss to Ole Miss.
Indiana entered the AP’s preseason Top 25 on September 17, two places behind Penn State. However, the Hoosiers were overwhelmed in Game 1 in Iowa, losing 34-6, and were quickly out of the domestic standings.
Indiana followed with a 56-14 victory over Idaho and a 38-24 loss to Cincinnati, which, like Iowa, is currently in the top 10.
Penix had X-rays and an MRI on his right wrist (non-pitcher) after falling to 1-2. He threw three interceptions in each of Indiana’s losses, totaling just two touchdowns along the way. He had 17 of 40 assists against Cincinnati.
“You have to make good decisions here (quarterback),” Hoosiers coach Tom Allen said. I don’t care what position you play on this team. You better play, you better play at a high level to do what we know we have to do to win football games. “
On Monday, Allen confirmed that Penix remains his starting quarterback going forward.
The Hoosiers will visit Conference USA member Western Kentucky before heading to Penn State. These teams last met at Beaver Stadium in a clash on November 16, 2019.
That day, the No.9 Nittany Lions rebounded from their first loss of the season (to Minnesota) to beat Indiana No.24, 34-27. Penn State has a 22-2 advantage over the series, and PSU have won six straight games through 2020. Indiana has never won at Beaver Stadium.
It will be the fourth game in a row for Penn State, which then hit the road for an Oct. 9 showdown in Iowa.
