Relatives and colleagues gathered on Saturday to pay tribute to one of the FBI agents killed by an alleged child pornographer in Florida.
Laura Schwartzenberger, 43, was shot dead in the morning raid on Tuesday when the suspect ambushed law enforcement as they served an arrest warrant against her home in Sunrise. A second officer, Daniel Alfin, was also killed and three other officers injured.
The suspect, David Lee Huber, 55, then committed suicide, police said.
Schwartzenberger, from Pueblo, Colorado, had been with the agency since 2005. She has worked on child crimes cases for over seven years. She leaves a husband and two children.
Hundreds of people attended the memorial service at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which included several speakers and a pipe and drum corps.
FBI Director Christopher Wray called her a “true American hero”.
He said Schwartzenberger was devoted to his family. A member of the agency’s dive team, while working in New Mexico, she became the first female member of the SWAT team in Albuquerque, CBS 12 Miami reported.
Friends recalled the good times from camping trips to backyard barbecues in the comments during emotional service.
“She attacked everything at full speed, never slowing down, even as she crossed the finish line,” said her friend Brenda Chavez. “Laura, you have blessed the life of everyone you touched. We will never forget you.”
The names of Schwartzenberger and Alfin will be added to the Wall of Honor at FBI Headquarters in Washington.
