Kim Mulkey thinks NCAA should ‘dump COVID testing’ for Final Four

SAN ANTONIO – Baylor coach Kim Mulkey believes the NCAA should remove COVID-19 testing for the Final Four and hinted Monday night that players should be able to participate in those games even if they are infected with the coronavirus.

“I don’t think my words matter, but after today’s games tomorrow there are four teams left, I think on the men’s side and the women’s side,” Mulkey said, uninvited, after his team lost to UConn 69-67 at Elite Eight. “They have to dump the COVID tests.”

Players and coaches from both tournaments have been tested daily and wear devices that help with contact tracing. On Saturday, there were two confirmed positive tests at the women’s tournament with more than 15,400 administered.

The latest positive result among players, coaches and others working at the tournament was reported on March 22 from daily antigen testing. All false positives are quickly retested using a PCR test, which is considered more accurate.

“Wouldn’t it be a shame to keep testing COVID and then you have kids who end up testing positive or something like that, and they can’t play in the Final Four,” Mulkey said. “So you just have to forget about the COVID testing and let the four teams that play in each Final Four fight.”
