From his 1933 debut to the big-budget show of 2017, let’s review Kong’s height in each of his films in preparation for Godzilla vs. Kong.
The official trailer for the next film Godzilla vs. Kong presents the tallest version of the monkey to date. While Kong’s exact height has not been confirmed, he appears to agree with the King of the Monsters, which puts him at around 390 feet. Godzilla has always dominated his enemies, but it’s a new extreme for Kong, who has stayed well below 100 feet in the majority of his films.
So, from his 1933 debut to the big-budget 2017 show, let’s go over the height of Kong in each of his live-action films in the works for Godzilla vs. Kong“Battle of the ages”.

King Kong (1933): 24 feet
King Kong’s height is somewhat open to interpretation in the original 1933 film. Although director Merian C. Cooper envisioned a massive monkey 40 to 50 feet tall, models reached 18 feet on Skull Island. and 24 feet in New York. Cooper believed in “changing Kong’s height to suit settings and illusions,” which made the gorilla a different height in almost every shot. Upon release, however, Kong was promoted to be 50 feet to speed up the drama. Despite the confusion, the 1933 film was a huge success, spawning dozens of remakes and spin-offs.
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962): 147 feet
In 1962, Japanese film studio Toho Company pitted Godzilla against King Kong for the first time in a battle of epic proportions. To ensure fair combat, Kong was enlarged to match the King of the Monsters, who always stayed above 100 feet regardless of the adaptation. The move put Kong at 147 feet, his tallest appearance to date, at least until 2021. Godzilla vs. Kong coming out later this year.
King Kong (1976): 55 feet
Italian director Dino De Laurentiis’ 1976 remake was a box office success and starred Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange in his first role. As well as appearing more human than his 1933 predecessor, Kong has more than doubled in size for this release. On Skull Island, Kong was 42 feet tall, while in New York City he was 55 feet.
King Kong Lives (1986): 60 feet
A decade later, De Laurentiis continued his 1976 film with King Kong lives in 1986. In the sequel, Kong survives his tragic fall and his failing heart is replaced by an artificial heart. While Kong is in need of a blood transfusion, the adventurers return to the island and capture “Lady Kong” and take her to New York. The two monkeys eventually escape and give birth to a son. Although the Bride of Frankenstein-The inspired story was a box office flop, Kong grew an additional five feet from the 1976 De Laurentiis film, placing him at 60 feet.
King Kong (2005): 25 feet
King Kong was significantly updated in Peter Jackson’s 2005 three-hour remake, which was praised for its special effects. Jackson on the character, confirming that he belonged to the fictional species Megaprimatus, which is said to have evolved from a true genus of apes known as Gigantopithecus. This tradition has put the gorilla at a reasonable distance of 25 feet, making Jackson’s Kong the smallest since the 1933 original.
Kong: Skull Island (2017): 104 feet
Located in 1973, Kong: Skull Island follows the encounter of a team of scientists and soldiers from the Vietnam War with the gigantic monkey and the last of its kind. Kong is 104 feet tall, which is a huge increase from the Jackson movie. Despite his massive size, Kong is classified as a teenager and, therefore, is not fully adult. This explains his huge jump in size to just under 400 feet in the 2021 sequel, Godzilla vs. Kong.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives March 26 in theaters and on HBO Max.
