As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact Hollywood, Disney has delayed another series of films.
On Friday, many titles, all from 20th century studios and the company’s Searchlight banner, were retired from the first half of the year. These films include “The King’s Man”, which moved from March 12 to August 20, while the family animated film “Ron’s Gone Wrong” was pushed back from April 23 to October 22. “Bob’s Burgers,” a film based on the popular TV show slated for April 9 has been removed from the release schedule entirely.
Meanwhile, four Searchlight titles have received new release dates: the horror film “The Night House” (July 16), the Jessica Chastain biopic “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (September 24), the thriller supernatural “Antlers” (Oct. 29 in limited edition) and Guillermo del Toro’s twisted thriller drama “Nightmare Alley” (December 3 in limited edition).
Prior to Friday’s announcement, “The King’s Man,” which has been repeatedly postponed amid the pandemic, was the only studio film still due for release in early 2021. Many high profile films have been delayed over the course of the year. the last 12 hours, with MGM pushing “No Time to Die” through October, and Sony moving “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” “Cinderella” with Camila Cabello and “Morbius” later in the year.
Disney made no mention of “Black Widow,” the Marvel movie starring Scarlett Johansson which is slated for release on May 7, 2021. But there’s a chance the studio will end up moving that movie as well, unless the coronavirus will only improve significantly next month.
Matthew Vaughn directed “The King’s Man”, the third installment in the franchise after “The Secret Service” and “The Golden Circle”. The final film is set in the early 1900s and portrays historic tyrants and criminal minds as they conceive a war that could wipe out millions of people. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Arterton and Daniel Brühl.
