Ahead of the kickoff of tonight’s game against South Carolina, Dawgs247 reported that red-shirted first-year quarterback D’Wan Mathis was no longer with the squad and needed to enter the NCAA student-athlete transfer. He did not travel with the Bulldogs in Colombia, the first time this season that the Belleville, Mich. Native has not been in the 70-man roster. After Georgia’s 45-16 win over the Gamecocks, head coach Kirby Smart was asked about the matter, and he stopped before confirming or denying the report that Mathis had left the program.

“D’Wan and I have had several conversations,” said Smart. “D’Wan has been very outgoing. He handled things really well. What is going on with D’Wan, our team and us is really a team affair, so I’m not really going to comment on that, but D’Wan handled everything with first class. “

Mathis has played four games this season with a start where he completed 12 of 30 passes for 89 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He also has 18 rushing attempts for 17 yards. That one start came at the opening of the 2020 season where he battled fiercely against Arkansas. He moved the chains in the first disc of his career, but took a big hit near the sideline to end the disc and warmed up until he was pulled in favor of Stetson Bennett IV .

Bennett entered the game in the second quarter and helped lead Georgia to a 37-10 victory. The Bulldogs were trailing 7-2 when Mathis left the game. Mathis returned to this game after it was in hand. He saw some action in the next two games, Auburn and Tennessee, but made no attempt to pass in either. He got his next shot in the second half against Florida when he completed four of 13 passes for 34 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions.

Georgia have called on JT Daniels as the next start against Mississippi State. Daniels responded by completing 28 of 38 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns. Tonight Daniels threw for 139 yards on 10 of 16 passes with two touchdowns and an interception.

Mathis was not in attendance at any of Georgia’s practices this week in preparation for South Carolina. Heading into last Saturday’s game against Mississippi State, he wasn’t one of three-quarterbacks taking crosses shots during the pre-game warm-up. Daniels was with the first group, Bennett with the second, and real rookie Carson Beck with the third unit.

Mathis signed with Georgia in the 2019 recruiting class and enrolled early. At 6ft 5,205 pounds, he was ranked as the nation’s No.311 overall prospect and No.11 pro-style quarterback by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. The Belleville, Mich. Native was signed to Ohio State as the early signing period approached, but the Bulldogs turned him around after learning Justin Fields was entering the transfer portal. He underwent winter training and spring drills with the Bulldogs in 2019 before undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his brain. It kept him from playing in 2019 and put his future in jeopardy, but he sacked the team later in the season to help lead the scout squad.
