The Oregon Ducks kicked off the 2020 college football season with a convincing win and are now heading into Game 2 with the Pac-12’s best shot to make the college football playoffs. While the playoff committee is expected to debut in just under two weeks, ESPN’s own playoff predictor has the Ducks with a 27% chance of making the last four playoffs.
The Ducks’ playoff odds increased nearly 10% with last weekend’s win and are the highest of a Pac-12 team by a significant margin with USC at 7% and Utah at just 2% according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.
In ESPN’s College Football Top 25, panelists David Pollack, Joey Galloway and Kirk Herbstreit shattered the Pac-12’s chances of making the playoffs, and analysts believe Pac-12’s playoff hopes are starting with the Ducks.
Herbstreit believes the addition of off-season coaches will be a major part of why the Ducks could make the playoffs.
“When I look at Oregon I’ll be very frank – Joe Moorhead is going to give this attack a chance because of the way that offensive style attacks.” Herbstreit continued, “I think Tyler Shough is the big question. Their backfield is ridiculously deep. The wide receivers are wildly talented. Five new offensive linemen with Mario Cristobal, PFF ranked them number one overall. college football versus a fairly complex Stanford defense. “
Tyler Shough was impressive in his first career start against Stanford with 227 yards and two total touchdowns, but the game alone didn’t convince Herbstreit that he’ll be able to lead the Ducks to the playoffs.
“For me, it will be about Shough’s development there,” Herbstreit said. “It’s impossible after a match to rate him and say he’s gonna be great or not. He looks pretty good to me. Surprising ability for his size to run that option and run their RPO game to be at the point and break some tackles with force and score touchdowns. “
While Herbstreit wouldn’t give a definitive rating with Oregon after their first game, the ESPN analyst is delighted to continue watching the Ducks.
“I’m a little excited considering how much Oregon has lost, I can’t wait to keep watching them and see where they go from this week in Wazzu and after that,” Herbstreit said.
Like Herbstreit, ESPN’s David Pollack believes the Ducks have a talent advantage that should help them in the Pac-12.
“When I look at the talent, Oregon looks like a league of its own,” Pollack said after the first weekend of the Pac-12 season. “Oregon looks like a team that if they can run the QB races, run the football the way they do, especially with the lineman they just broke into, with the guns they have widely. wide receiver and they continue to grow, this is a team that I will continue to watch out for later. “
