Kanye West, you have chosen the wrong smiling-blonde-woman.jpg to put on your campaign posters. On August 18, the independent presidential candidate tweeted a ‘KANYE 2020 VISION’ poster featuring archival footage of smiling people from all walks of life, including a close-up of a happy and sunny Kirsten Dunst. Turns out the photo was taken by photographer Mario Testino and was from a Vanity Fair photo shoot in 2002. Dunst, who publicly endorsed and endorsed Bernie Sanders in the 2020 primaries, tweeted his confusion about the unauthorized use of his face on West’s campaign poster, replying, “What’s the message here, and why am I separated [sic] this side? with the shrugged lady emoji. And this is really the question we all want answered: is the message here? Where is he going with that? Why is this happening?
Look, we’re happy to have a reason to reflect on Dunst’s ethereal beauty in the post –Virgin suicides time, but it’s a shame we have to talk about it because West is moving forward with this political project. Aside from the confused political tendencies of the West, the aesthetic of this poster are absolutely not. Among the checkerboard of various smiling children, the elderly, and construction helmet workers, West also uses a photo of Anna Wintour, because, yes, Condé Nast management is really what you want your campaign to be associated with right now.
