Domestic Security Department Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is expected to resign from a meeting at the White House on Sunday, US officials said. Nielsen was scheduled to meet with President Trump at 5 pm, officials said.

Nielsen's expected departure is part of a massive DHS overhaul, designed and led by Trump's chief adviser, Stephen Miller, according to a senior US official. It is unclear whether Nielsen decides to resign voluntarily or whether she has been pressured to do so.

Nielsen's early exit also comes after Mr. Trump announced that he wanted the Director of Immigration and Law Enforcement and Customs in charge of enforcing the the law is "more severe", having previously announced that Ron Vitiello would direct ICE.

A senior official told CBS News that Customs and Border Commissioner Kevin McAleenan was considering acting as Interim Secretary of DHS if Nielsen's resignation became official, but it is unlikely that he would be appointed permanent replacement for Nielsen.

This is a story in development and will be updated.
